Lugol's Iodine & Lugol's Iodine Plus

THE UNIVERSAL NUTRIENT

There are many ways iodine impacts our health, and if we have deficiencies, it can negatively impact our health. Iodine is involved in immunity, metabolism, energy production, fetal and early childhood cognitive development, hormone production, the conversion of carcinogenic estrogen and progesterone hormone metabolites, heavy metal and radiation detoxification, and more.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT IODINE

It is estimated that more than 90% of the U.S. population is iodine-deficient, and up to 74% is severely deficient based on clinical findings and national studies by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). [NHANES I – 1974 and NHANES II – 2000]

Do any of these sound familiar?

  • Weight gain or difficulty losing weight-
  • Sluggishness, fatigue, or exhaustion
  • Brain fog, confusion and lack of mental clarity
  • Memory loss
  • Lower than normal (98.6oF) body temperature or intolerant to cold
  • Hair loss, dry skin, cracked heels, brittle nails, or coarse, dry hair
  • Sparse eyebrow hair on the outer 1/3rd of the eyebrow
  • Constipation
  • Depression
  • Frequent muscle aches or cramps
  • Decreased libido
  • Infertility
  • Candida
  • Difficulty managing stress
  • Poor digestive function
  • Inadequate stomach acid production
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Fibroids
  • Fibrocystic breast lumps
  • Breast cancer
  • Abnormal or heavy menstruation
  • Thyroid problems
  • Heavy metal toxicity
  • Low immunity (easily catching colds or flu viruses)

Then you—like 74% to 90% of Americans—are likely deficient in iodine.

“Iodine is the body’s first line of defense against infections, the “vehicle” that moves secretions from inside cells to outside cells so they can be used. Iodine is critical to make thyroid hormones (which control cellular voltage) and is necessary to make stomach acid. Most importantly, iodine needs cofactors like selenium and zinc to work correctly. The “Plus” of Lugol’s Plus are those factors to make Iodine work. You can’t just substitute iodine by itself and get the results you need.”

WHAT DOES IODINE DO?

what does iodine do for our health

A few roles iodine plays in our health...

Supercharges Energy Production and Fires Up the Metabolism

  • Iodine is required to synthesize thyroid hormones. These hormones regulate metabolism, oxygenation and energy production. When we are iodine-deficient, we can lack energy and can feel sluggish.

  • All of the the cells in your body use iodine, and thyroid hormones can increase the body’s need for iodine. Disorders that involve iodine deficiencies may worsen or become more prevalent, such as breast, prostate or thyroid cancers. This is why it may be important for patients taking thyroid hormones to supplement with a high-quality iodine supplement.

  • Iodine is needed to make thyroid hormones. Low energy or metabolism are also symptoms of hypothyroidism. When patients take thyroid medications for hypothyroidism, their need for iodine throughout the body (not just for making thyroid hormones) rises due to improved metabolic processes.

Easier Weight Management

  • Iodine helps prevent metabolic weight gain and helps maintain healthier weight and energy levels.
  • Iodine can fire up the metabolism so your body can burn calories more easily.

Hormone Balance and Cancer

  • Iodine promotes hormone balance and production of all the body’s hormones—not just thyroid hormones. Balance is key for disease prevention, as well as an overall sense of well-being.

  • Iodine helps regulate hormone production and balance estrogen production in the ovaries in females and adrenal tissues in men, which can stimulate the development and progression of hormone-related cancers such as breast, ovarian, uterine, cervical and prostate cancers.

  • Estrogen dominance in both men and women is dramatically increased in iodine-deficient, hypothyroid states. Estrogen dominance also appears to be a significant risk factor in the development of hormone-related cancers.

  • Incidence of hormone-related cancers (breast, ovarian, uterine, prostate and cervical) and stomach, lung, esophagus, thyroid and throat cancer are markedly increased in iodine-deficient patients.

  • Incidence of goiter (enlargement of the thyroid gland because of iodine deficiency) and breast and prostate cancers, have a direct relationship with iodine levels. Two studies done in Iceland and Japan—populations with high iodine intake—have shown a much lower incidence of breast and prostate cancers and goiter compared to other populations.

  • Iodine helps prevent fibrocystic breast disease and is used successfully to treat fibrocystic diseases such as uterine fibroids and ovarian cysts.

Cardiovascular Health

  • Iodine supplementation can naturally reduce the amount of circulating cholesterol by helping to address one of the underlying causes of high-cholesterol: hormone imbalances and deficiencies. Cholesterol is the precursor to sex steroidal hormones and adrenal hormones.

  • Iodine sufficiency can help prevent or alleviate symptoms of metabolic syndrome starting with the hallmark: hypothyroidism. Clinical studies show a direct correlation between iodine deficiency and the cascade of other diseases related to metabolic syndromes such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Strong Immune System

  • Iodine destroys viruses, bacteria, pathogens, molds, fungi, parasites and malaria on contact.

  • Iodine helps prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs).

  • Iodine treats and helps prevent h. Pylori—a bacterial infection of the stomach—that has been connected with ulcers and gastric cancer.

Mental Focus, Clarity and Memory

  • Children born to women with higher iodine levels showed a decrease in SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) and a higher childhood survival rate.

  • Iodine can even make us smarter as it promotes sharp thinking, mental focus, cognitive functioning, and helps eliminate brain fog in adults.

Normal Fetal and Childhood Development

  • Iodine makes children smarter. Iodine is essential for normal growth and development of children. Pregnant women who are iodine-deficient have children with a greater risk of mental development issues. A study showed a 15-point reduction in children’s IQ when pregnant women were iodine-deficient.

  • Iodine helps support proper fetal development and growth along with speech and hearing development.

  • The percentage of pregnant women with iodine deficiency increased 690% between the NHANES I (1974) and NHANES ii (2000) studies. It is well-known that a low maternal iodine level in fetal development is associated with higher levels of cretinism, mental development issues, autism, ADD, SIDS, ALS and other myelin disorders.

Pregnancy and Reproductive Health

  • Adequate iodine levels can also be important in the treatment of infertility, because iodine is essential for healthy hormone balance.

  • Pregnant women who have adequate iodine are also less likely to experience high blood pressure during pregnancy.

  • Iodine can help prevent and treat endometriosis, uterine fibroids and ovarian cysts related to hormonal imbalance and dysfunction.

Fibromyalgia and Migraines

  • Iodine helps reduce fibromyalgia symptoms.

  • Iodine supplementation helps resolve migraine headaches and other types of chronic headaches for many patients.

Heavy Metal and Halide Detoxification

  • Adequate iodine levels reduce the amount of halide toxicity in the body from fluoride (in water), chlorine (in water) and bromine (in bread preservatives and carpet flame retardants).

  • Iodine levels can be affected by halides. Halides successfully compete for iodine’s binding sites on cells and hormones, rendering them ineffective. For example, thyroid hormones may contain atoms of bromine rather than iodine, as they should. This results in inactive thyroid hormones. This is why some practitioners and patients are perplexed at “normal” thyroid hormone test results, with hypothyroid symptoms.

  • Iodine helps prevent lead and other metals from being stored in the body.

Radioactivity Protection

  • Iodine helps prevent the effects of radiation exposure from the use of cordless phones and cell phones.

  • Normal iodine levels can protect the thyroid and the rest of the body from radioactivity generated by nuclear accidents, such as the radiation drift from the Fukushima disaster that crossed the Pacific and is still detected on the U.S. mainland.

Healthy Skin, Nails, Teeth and Hair

  • Iodine is essential to the formation of healthy skin, nails, teeth and shiny hair.

  • Iodine supports hair growth and follicle strength.

  • Iodine deficiency results in hair loss.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF IODINE

Iodine has been used by medical practitioners for 200 years and was once considered the universal medicine. However, it has only fallen by the wayside in the past 50 years.

Iodine was shown to be able to treat goiters in the early 1900s—a common problem away from the coast where people typically have significant iodine deficiencies.

In Michigan and Ohio, studies conducted in the early 1920s on school children showed 40% had an enlarged thyroid gland or goiter. It was found that treatment with just a small amount of iodine caused goiters to go away. By 1928, there was a 75% reduction in goiter cases in the area. These studies led to the addition of iodine in table salt. However, goiters are still around today.

Can iodized salt really provide enough iodine?

The amount of iodine in iodized salt is not sufficient for the body’s overall needs. There are 77 micrograms (μg) of iodine per gram of iodized salt. An individual’s average salt intake is five grams per day, which would be 385 μg per day of iodine. Urine tests actually show lower levels than this estimate, primarily because the iodine in iodized salt is only about 10% bioavailable.

Medical school teaches that the existing iodine in salt is adequate. However, sea salt, which many people use, contains very little iodine. The current recommended daily allowance (RDA) for adults is 150-220 μg per day, a recommendation developed in 1924 based on findings of goiter prevention studies.

This RDA is only the amount that helps prevent goiter and is typically not sufficient for the entire body’s needs

This amount is specifically inadequate to help prevent cancer. The body needs 100 times this RDA alone to produce iodolactone, which is required for normal cell apoptosis.

The thyroid alone needs five to seven milligrams a day of iodine and is first in line for iodine from the diet. That was milligrams (mg), not micrograms (μg); five to seven milligrams is equivalent to 5,000 to 7,000 micrograms.

The current RDA for iodine is a fraction of this (150-220 μg). In terms of how much iodine the thyroid gland needs alone, it is more than 31 times the recommended amount of 220 μg per day! Breast tissue and reproductive tissues require a similar amount. Without adequate iodine, breast and other reproductive tissues can develop fibroids.

Every tissue in the body requires iodine!

Clearly, the current RDA is not enough. Many healthcare practitioners now use 12.5 mg daily as the current standard for adult supplementation. It is important to work with your practitioner to determine your unique needs. Iodine does have contraindications, especially for patients who may have developed autoimmune thyroid disease. Iodine testing is an important tool to help determine an individual’s ideal iodine level.

WHY YOU SHOULD NOT TAKE IODINE WITH CHLORINATED WATER

Chlorinated water, bakery products, flame retardants and other dietary and environmental issues reduce our body’s ability to use iodine. Chlorine, Fluorine and Bromine compete with iodine in the body. On the periodic table of elements, iodine is in a group called the Halogens. Fluorine, Chlorine and Bromine are in the same Halogen family.

Iodine is lower on the table, which means that the elements above iodine in the Halogens group are much more reactive

Fluorine, Chlorine and Bromine compete with and displace iodine. They are all more reactive than iodine. They are more electronegative than iodine, so they will take binding sites first and even displace iodine that has already binded.

Why Is This Important?

Fluorine, Chlorine and Bromine compete very strongly with iodine. Chlorine and Fluorine are in our water. Bakery products and carpets are now very high in Bromine. Chlorine, Bromine and Fluorine compete with iodine-binding sites on the thyroid hormone. When this occurs, the thyroid hormone does not function as it does when iodine is in place. It creates a state of thyroid deficiency called secondary hypothyroidism.

Even though you may have adequate thyroid hormone levels according to test results, if it is brominated (meaning the iodine-binding sites have bromine instead of iodine), the thyroid hormones do not work like they should! Chlorine and Fluorine in water also compete with iodine and replicate the above situation. Hypothyroidism leads to many serious health issues, including obesity.

Fortunately, iodine supplementation can help increase urinary excretion of Fluorine, Chlorine and Bromine. These elements—Fluorine, Chlorine and Bromine—are toxic to our bodies. Take care to drink pure water and eat non-brominated bread in order to significantly decrease your toxin exposure.

WHAT MAKES DR. TENNANT'S® LUGOL'S IODINE SPECIAL

Lugol's Iodine is different as it offers both forms of iodine: Iodine and Iodide

The entire body uses Iodine and Iodide, not just the thyroid. Various tissues and organs are designed to concentrate large amounts of iodine and iodide necessary for their normal structure and function. Conversely, low iodine levels are associated with autoimmune thyroid disease, breast cancer, thyroid cancer, goiter and fibromyalgia, as well as cysts and nodules of the: breasts, thyroid and ovaries.

Both types of iodine are needed in the body—breast and prostate tissue prefer iodine and thyroid tissues prefer iodide—and both types are available with a Lugol's solution. Other types of iodine formulations have not been shown to provide this type of tissue-specific support.

LUGOL'S IODINE "LIQUID"

Dr. Tennant’s® Lugol’s Iodine liquid is an excellent solution for supporting the body’s need for both Iodine and Iodide. Iodine is one of the few elements required for cellular health that the body cannot produce, so it needs to be supplemented through food or additional supplementation.

Dr. Tennant’s® Lugol’s Iodine liquid is a dissolvable and versatile solution that can be diluted as needed per your healthcare provider’s instructions.

However, iodine needs specific co-factors to be utilized by our body; therefore it is recommend that you take it with RESTORE, since RESTORE has all of the co-factors needed. See below for more information about co-factors.

important co=factors in Dr. Tennant's Lugol's Iodine Plus

What are the co-factors in Lugol’s Iodine Plus and what do they do?

Selenium

  • Selenium is the primary mineral responsible for T4 to T3 (thyroid hormones) conversion in the liver.
  • Selenium and Iodine/Iodide, along with Zinc, are essential in the conversion of carcinogenic estrogen and progesterone metabolites.
  • Supplementation or consumption of high amounts of Iodine without Selenium can induce AIT (autoimmune thyroiditis) and goiter.
  • Selenium and Iodine/Iodide can reduce goiter and inflammation of the thyroid gland.
  • Selenium supplementation reduces TgAb that may be elevated by taking Iodine.
  • TPOAb levels is inversely associated with Selenium levels (higher physiological Selenium levels are associated with lower antibody levels and vice versa).

Zinc

  • Zinc may be helpful in patients with low T3 and may contribute to the conversion of T4 to T3. (1)
  • Zinc may be helpful in normalizing levels of rT3.
  • Zinc, Selenium and Iodine/Iodide are essential in the converting of carcinogenic estrogen and progesterone metabolites.

Vitamin C

  • Clinical case studies by Drs. Abraham and Brownstein have shown that the administration of Vitamin-C can improve defective cellular transport mechanisms for iodine. (2)

Fulvic Acid Trace Minerals and Elements

    • Fulvic acid molecules carry up to 60 minerals and elements and help improve absorption and facilitate transport to cells.
    • Fulvic acid molecules are negatively charged and donate electrons for membrane and cellular functions, including mitochondrial energy production.
    • Iodine sufficiency and Humic and Fulvic acids help protect glands from radiation poisoning. Radioactive elements have an affinity for Humic and Fulvic acids. They form organo-metal complexes of different adsorptive stability and solubility. Uranium and Plutonium are influenced by Humic substances, as are other polluting metals, each being solubilized and absorbed, thereby annihilating the specific radioactivity. (3, 4)
